Warning bell for P M Modi (A discussion)

Here I'm placing an online discussion with my friend Raghuvansh Mani ji regarding PM Modi.

Vidyadhar Mishra (Friend of my friend Raghuvansh Mani)-
Modi has been PM for only one year. Those before him never saw the problems. Imagine, Secondary schools in UP never had toilets for girls and this was taken as normal by the great seculars of India. Now that the fanatic Hindu has become PM, he has addressed the problem and he is addressing many more issues to make India a clean and safe place for the poor. Many forward castes cannot digest the fact that an OBC has become PM and is discharging his responsibilities so well that put all his predecessors in shame.

Raguvansh Mani (My friend, leftist by thoughts )-
He is not that great, He is simply talking and talking. There is hardly any change in the prospects here. It is irrelevant to compare him with Nehru, Indira or even Rajiv. they brought sea change in the history of this country.

Myself-
I accept Raguvanshji that Nehruji and Indira were Great despite of all their shortcomings. But I fail to understand how Rajiv Gandhi joins the category of Greats with his faltering on Shahbano case by submitting to fundamentalists, then repeating the same by allowing shilanyas at Ramjaanmbhoomi. The only thing that is often repeated by the Congress in his favour is that he introduced computers to India. Computers are prevalent in the whole world now and any way they would have been introduced to India.Rajiv Gandhi is primarily responsible for rise of fundamentalism in India as he gave long rope to such elements. He was a mediocre person thrust upon the nation by Indira Gandhi and Congress Party. Nehru had eighteen years behind him and Indira fifteen years as PM for all their Greatness. It is true that although Modi has only one and half years as PM behind him,he is losing time very fast and even the good efforts by him are at the risk of going to dustbin due to rogue elements of his party. He has to act fast if he wants to be remembered as PM of India by future generations.

Raguvansh Mani-
Yes. Rajiv Gandhi failed on certain issues that you mentioned but his achievements are better than Modi, the talkative. Remember his Operation Blackboard and New Education Policy along with the Panchayati Raj and Empowerment of Women. There may be some disagreement on those issues but he implemented them sincerely. We should not forget that the computer matter could not be introduced in the time of Indira Gandhi, but only during the regime of Rajiv Gandhi. At least he exhibited the will power to do so. Modi has yet to start his machine.

Myself-
Implementation of a scheme is different from standing for principles. It is standing for principles and even being ready to make sacrifices for, that in my view makes a difference between mortals and everlasting Greats. On that count Rajiv Gandhi who had come to power with immense goodwill of people failed miserably. He capitulated before fundamentalists and ultimately lost power.
Ironically here I find an analogy with Narendra Modi.Modi also came to power with immense goodwill and hope of people who believed he was a doer of things. Now if he doesn't act decisively against fundamentalists of his party and tightens noose around them , he is also on the verge of losing his credibility with the people amid combined onslaught of opposition and leftists forces. On this score, his action in favour of pluralistic culture of the country or disregard and inaction for the same otherwise, will decide whether he has any shred of Greatness in him or merely a talker. I don't think he can wait as the moment has arrived. I had some expectations on this count as he had reined in the the VHP and some other Sangh affiliated Organisations in the later years of his reign in Gujrat but so far it has not happened during his present stint as PM. Now he has the virtual risk of losing the plot. So far as implementation of schemes is concerned Modi can also say that now India's GDP has surpassed that of China and India has emerged as biggest investment destination of the world. He can count many other schemes, but I don't think that can place him in the category of Greats if he fails on the front of unity, integrity and plurality of the country and allows his partymen or affiliates to have a field day for attacking these core values of the nation.

Raguvansh Mani-
The point is that the previous PMs had fared better than the present PM. Implementation of programmes is more Important than keep on talking. So, this PM wil have to prove himself by his work and not by his talks. I think it was the right wing that produced the communal politics in India. It is good to stand by principles, but wrong to stand by the principles that create disturbances in the society. Manish ji (I've not quoted Manishji's comment here which Raghuvanshji is reacting to) it is strange to find you saying things like Indira played some role in the increase of population. She was the first PM to make an attempt to put a check on population. You should not forget that one of the reasons of her fall after the Emergency was the Nasbandi karyakram. After her no PM has tried to put a check on this issue. You are young enough to know the actual situation when operation Blue Star was ordered. The case of Sikh killings was not organised. it took place after the assasination of Mr Gandhi. Many RSS leaders were emotional enough to declare the bycott of Sikhs those days. Mr. Adwani told Indira to do something after the assasination of Lalit Makan. Now people are so political that they say anything to get their political aims. No doubt India was defeated in the Indo-China war. But the Indian army was not prepared for that attack. Nehru was certainly not a great leader to lead a war. But he was a great leader of peace. There cannot be any comparison between him and this PM of yours. Fundamentalism was fired on the mistakes of Rajiv by Adwani and his RathYatra. But no BJP propagandist will talk of the communal frenzy created in those days. Well, they are always selective. You should see the negative and positive aspects both at a time. Our past leaders had their drawbacks, but they had great qualities too, and they performed very well. Modi has yet to show his ability. But for many he is no less than God.
Sanjay ji , I agree that the political principles are very important. Nerendra Modi is a flower bloomed on the stem of RSS. I don't think he will act aginst these institutions. Let us see and hope for better.

My finishing comment-
As I've said above in my comment, the moment for Modi to act and prove that along with the unity and integrity of India he is committed towards preserving its plural culture and ethos also, has arrived. Mere telling that so and so have been reprimanded won't do. It feels like a farce when the so-called reprimanded persons again speak in the same voice after a few days only. P M should be seen acting decisively. Otherwise he is on the verge of losing the plot as shown now by the result of Bihar elections.
